Perfect, plump, full lips with Juvederm lip enhancement

Before and after photos of upper lip filled with Juvederm.

Recently a woman sent an email to Dr. Kerr telling him how much she loved his work. She happens to live in Europe and since she couldn't get to Dr. Kerr, wondered if he would be willing to share his technique and how much dermal filler he used, etc. Dr. Kerr was happy to share his technique. And here is more of their correspondence. --Susie

Good evening doctor!

I am writing from Europe and I know you do not have to answer my question, but I would be really happy for a short information.

"I have seen a photo of a great job you did on lip augmentation with juvederm at your blog. As I live in Europe, unfortunately I can't go to the US just to get lip augmentation done by you, but if I could I certainly would :).

Nevertheless I'd like to ask my surgeon here, to get the same effect that is visible in your photos as I have exactly same lips as the patient photographed. Therefore I kindly ask for an information on how much of the filler was injected to gain such an effect." -Megan from Europe

Dr. Kerr's answer:

These lips were treated with Juvederm Ultra. As you can tell from the "before" picture this patient already had a very nice bottom lip, however she was very self conscious about her upper lip.

Generally I use about 0.4-0.5 ml in the upper lip and 0.3-0.4 in the lower lip primarily along the vermilion border starting about 2-3 mm from the corner of the mouth and let the Juvederm track medially under slow steady pressure. Often it will track along the vermilion border all the way to the mid line or across to the other side. Occasionally it will stop tracking and I will advance to the point where it has been impeded and begin injecting from that point. In this particular patient I used the entire unit (0.8ml) in the upper lip with about 0.5-0.6mls along the vermilion border and the balance into medial body of the lip to enhance the volume.

This patient continues to return to my Medspa about once a year for touch up of her lips.

Thanks for your inquiry,

Brian Kerr MD

And then a follow up email to Susie, Dr. Kerr's wife.

As I have my sister living in the U.S. maybe I could visit your medical center, while visiting her someday :) It would be great to get some lip treatment by Dr. Kerr as me and my friends find his work extremely well done- the effect is very natural and the amount of the filler is well- balanced. I hope i get a similar effect from my doctor using Dr. Kerr's advice and knowledge!

Thank you for your kind interest and support
,
Megan M.

Breast Enhancement (augmentation) without surgery?

Boise's Idaho Statesman's Healthy Advice Page can be found in Thursday's Paper. Dr. Brian Kerr is a contributor.

Q: Is there anything I can do to get fuller breasts
besides having surgery?

A: Many of the clients that visit with me would like the “breast fairy” to sprinkle a little magic their way….but are afraid to get breast implants because they do not want to undergo breast surgery (breast augmentation or they don’t like the fake look.

There is an alternative out there that may solve your dilemma. Fat Transfer is a great way to give the breasts a lift.
A study by Louisiana State University found that out of 40 patients who had their own fat transferred from areas like their abdomen and thighs there was a high satisfaction rate. The patients showed improvement in the shape and size of their breasts which remained natural looking and soft. They had fullness and cleavage. This study concluded that fat transfer is a low-complication alternative to a breast lift with implants. I have found that within my practice clients enjoy fuller, softer breasts and the fat can create the illusion of a breast lift without actual breast lift surgery. Instead, we use laser liposuction, often called Smartlipo (Smart lipo) to remove the fat and then transfer it to the breasts. Fat Transfer can last for many years. For very low breasts or sagging breasts…surgery is still needed. For more information about Fat Transfer visit www.SilkTouchMedspa.com

Wrinkle reduction and skin tightening with Pelleve.

Women and men in their 40's often start to see some sagging in their lower jawline. They've been using botox religiously to keep wrinkles at bay, and perhaps a wrinkle filler to plump the lips and maybe a little filler like Juvederm in the face to give the face a lift, but it's not always easy to find a solution for the lower face, jawline and neck. I'm very excited that we are the first to bring the new Pelleve wrinkle reduction treatment to Boise, Idaho!

Click here to watch a video of pelleve wrinkle reduction treatment.

Pelleve wrinkle reduction treatment is the newest innovation in skin tightening. FDA cleared to treat facial wrinkles without surgery, this treatment uses advanced radiowave technology. The Pelleve system precisely heats the deep layers of the skin without damaging the epidermis. The heat causes the collagen in the skin to contract and tighten. After the treatment, the skin begins to produce new collagen, which improves the firmness. No anesthesia is required and patients can return to work immediately after the procedure. Many clients see results after just one treatment, with improvements up to six months later. Facial treatments take only an hour. Pelleve fits easily into busy schedules.
This treatment may allow a patient to postpone a face lift for ten years!

CO2 Fractional Resurfacing Laser erases wrinkles and sun damage!

CO2 Fractional Laser for skin resurfacing can take years off of one's face.

Here is a 59 year old client who has had just one treatment with the CO2 Fractional Laser.

Notice the appearance of the skin is brighter. The laser takes off the dead skin cells allowing newer skin to come to the surface and reflect light giving her a more youthful appearance.
Wrinkles have significantly diminished around the eyes and under the eye area down into the cheeks. The eyelids are smoother in appearance and sun damage of the skin has been reduced.

This client could have one more treatment about 6 months later, but her improvement after just one treatment is quite satisfying. Her overall appearance is much more youthful.

CO2 Fractional lasers stimulate collagen up to six months after the initial treatment, but we have seen improvement up to a year later. For more information click here.

Do it yourself Botox? A very bad idea.

Do-it-yourself Botox..... a really bad idea.

I had heard rumors that you could buy Botox "do it yourself kits" on line but frankly I didn't believe it. I was stunned to find that it is true. Not only botox but dermal fillers as well. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind if you are the "do it yourself" kind of person.

  1. It is illegal to sell and illegal to buy without a prescription.
  2. Such operations can and will be shut down. You could loose your investment as well as be prosecuted.
  3. The pricing is so low that the products can not be legitimate. The wholesale cost to physicians with bulk discounting is 2-3 times what these wesites are offering. I don't like the fact that these raw products are so expensive either, but that is the market pricing.
  4. These ares not FDA approved BOTOX or dermal fillers. What is it? Who knows.
  5. I've done thousand of injections. Its one thing to inject someone else, a completely different thing to inject yourself in a mirror. Everything is reversed and you lose depth perception.
  6. Ask yourself this question. Would you want the doctor injecting you to be experiencing the pain of injection right at the moment he or she is focusing on making an artistically placed injection in you.
  7. My moto is "you can't rush art", and you sure can't make good art while under the stress of self inflicted pain.

Do-it-yourself Botox business busted in Mansfield

by REBECCA LOPEZ / WFAA-TV

Posted on November 25, 2009 at 10:00 AM

MANSFIELD -- Undercover officers raided the home of a Mansfield woman who they say was selling do-it-yourself wrinkle treatments.

Police confiscated boxes, computers and more at the home of Laurie D'Alleva. Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott charged the Tarrant County woman with illegally offering prescription drugs -- including botulinum toxin (Botox) injections -- without a license.

The legal action also alleges that D'Alleva operated illegal Web sites to market her products. The state obtained a restraining order to keep her from selling the drugs and shut down her Internet sites, Discount Medspa and Ontario MedSpa.

The sites included video demonstrations of how to use the prescription drugs, along with customer tesimonials about the results they were getting.

Doctors caution that self-injecting or taking any drug without the authorization of a doctor can be harmful -- even deadly.

The state said D’Alleva falsely claimed that her membership in the "Texas Medical Council" authorized her to sell prescription-only products. There is no such organization.

According to court documents, undercover investigators bought a “Newbie Starter Kit” from D'Alleva which contained the prescription Restylane in a filled syringe. They also purchased Dysport and Freeze, both of which contain purified neurotoxins, which are used for wrinkle-reduction.

Empty syringes, needles and other pharmaceuticals were also seized at D'Alleva's home.

Residents of the quiet Mansfield neighborhood said they were surprised when they saw officers entering the residence.

"I thought she was a housewife," said Dana Child.

The Attorney General's office is seeking civil penalties of up to $25,000 per violation per day.

New Study Confirms Vaser Lipo Results are Superior to Standard Liposuction

New Study Confirms VASER Lipo Results Are Superior to Standard Liposuction

At the 78th Annual American Society of Plastic Surgeons Annual (ASPS) Meeting, Dr. Paul Vanek presented a study that confirms that VASER-Assisted Lipoplasty (VAL) delivers superior results over traditional Suction-Assisted Lipoplasty (SAL) in skin retraction and blood loss.

SEATTLE, Oct. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- At the 78th Annual American Society of Plastic Surgeons Annual (ASPS) Meeting, Dr. Paul Vanek presented a study that confirms that VASER-Assisted Lipoplasty (VAL) delivers superior results over traditional Suction-Assisted Lipoplasty (SAL) in skin retraction and blood loss.

In a study called "A Multi-Center, Prospective, Randomized, Single-Blind, Controlled Clinical Trial Comparing VASER-Assisted Lipoplasty and Suction-Assisted Lipoplasty" results showed that the VASER Lipo treatment demonstrated 53% improvement in skin retraction per mL of aspirate removed relative to the standard SAL method, and a 26% reduction in blood loss. This is the first study to demonstrate statistically significant and clinically relevant improvements in a new lipoplasty technology relative to SAL. This prospective study used a contra-lateral (side-by-side) study design to evaluate post-operative differences between the two techniques over a six-month time period.

"Physicians have been reporting skin tightening benefits and reduced blood loss with the VASER Lipo System since the technology was released in 2002," said Dan Goldberger, CEO of Sound Surgical Technologies LLC. "This study now provides empirical evidence of yet another advantage of using VASER ultrasonic energy in all body contouring procedures."

The study involved twenty female patients between the ages of 20 and 48 who received contra-lateral treatment with traditional liposuction and VASER Lipo in one or more anatomical regions that included the upper arms, upper back, flanks, outer thighs, and inner thighs for a total of 33 regions. Patients were blinded to the technology that was used on them and aspirate was kept separate and analyzed for blood content. Skin retraction was measured using changes in UV tattoos placed prior to surgery.

The study was funded by Sound Surgical Technologies LLC, and the authors received no stipends to participate in the clinical trial. Neither author has a financial interest in any of the products or devices used in the study.

About VASER Lipo - The VASER Lipo System was designed to provide physicians with a versatile tool to treat all areas of the body, from small procedures in the face and neck, to large volume treatments in the abdomen and back. VASER ultrasonic energy is able to selectively liquefy fat while preserving important tissue structures vital to natural skin tightening. By preserving nerves, blood vessels and collagen, physicians report also experience minimal to no pain and bruising postoperatively allowing for a fast return to normal activities.

About Sound Surgical - Founded in 1998, Sound Surgical Technologies placed its first VASER Lipo System on the market in March 2001. More than 100,000 procedures have been performed worldwide using the VASER System. An alternative to traditional tumescent liposuction, the VASER - Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance - Lipo System uses an advanced ultrasonic fat removal technology that has become a trusted method in a society saturated with fad procedures. Demanded by physicians and patients alike, the results are smooth and consistent with fast patient recovery. The VASER Lipo System is FDA cleared for body contouring.
